Glad to see county
cares about pets

Congratulations to Santa Clara County for recognizing the fact that it needs to be prepared to shelter animals as well as their guardians in case of disaster ("Emergency drill includes disaster aid for the county's furry friends," July 26).

People and animals are still suffering from the results of Hurricane Katrina because the humans were ill-prepared and the leaders were unwilling to respond to the emotional needs of families with pets.

Project Hope, an animal sanctuary in Grenada, Miss., is overrun with dogs because of the Katrina orphans who have not been retrieved or re-homed. There are no government or private shelters in the area so people just dump their adult, pregnant dogs and puppies at Project Hope's gate.

Help is needed. Project Hope's website is www.project-hope.net.
