Local film premieres on the East Coast

Fat Rose and Squeaky, the independent film produced by Willow Glen-based etc...group entertainment, premieres at the Rhode Island International Film Festival on Aug. 11.

The film focuses on the relationship of two elderly women: Bonnie Ash Fitzgerald, played by Louise Fletcher, and Celine Snow, played by Cicely Tyson. The women share friendship, poetry and tofu casseroles as they deal with aging. The film is named after Bonnie's "railroad trash" housemates, Fat Rose and Squeaky, portrayed by Lea DeLaria and Julie Brown.

Most of the film was shot locally in a Victorian home in the Naglee Park neighborhood. Part of the movie was also filmed at the Willow Glen Liquors and Wine shop on Lincoln Avenue.

The story is based on a play written by etc...group partner Stan Harris, an Almaden resident. Harris and Gary Proefke run the Willow Glen business, which created the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association's new brand image.

At the film festival, Tyson will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Tyson won an Emmy for her performance in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

Shell Station site
will be leased out

The old Shell station on the corner of Lincoln and Curtner avenues has been decommissioned and is set for demolition.

Shell Oil Company is in the process of having the property inspected and the tanks removed, said Shell facility engineer Bill Merchant.

According to Dell Dietrich of American Commercial Realty, the broker for the property, Shell is responsible for removing the gas tanks and leveling the building before the property can be developed.

Dietrich said the land is not for sale, but will be offered as a ground lease for up to 99 years to potential developers or businesses.

Dietrich said the property owners are open to all development suggestions, including retail development, an office building or a possibly fast-food restaurant. The property will be put on the market for lease at the end of the month.
