22 board vacancies
available to residents

The city of San Jose is accepting applications through Aug. 31 for vacancies on several boards and committees.

San Jose residents who want to become more involved in their community can apply for volunteer positions on commissions pertaining to historic landmarks, housing, human rights, mobile homes, parks and recreation, senior citizens, the advisory committee on rents, appeals hearing board or small business development.

The city is looking to fill 22 positions that are open on these different committees. Volunteers serve for three years, and attend one or two meetings each month.

Applicants would go through an interview and selection process in the fall and, if chosen, would start on
Jan. 1.

United Way run aids
low-income youths

The familiar phrase "Run Forrest run" is not being heard by moviegoers watching a rerun of Forrest Gump, but as a way to encourage families to help low-income children.

United Way Silicon Valley is sponsoring a Run Forrest Run 5K fun run and walk at Great America on Sept. 17. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $30 for adults and $20 for children. The proceeds from the event benefit United Way's Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, which assists families who cannot afford to send their children to camp.

High school parent
summit at city hall

Families of high schoolers considering college have a chance to explore their options at the mayor's high school parent summit on Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Jose City Hall, 200 E. Santa Clara St.

The event is a collaboration of a dozen organizations, including the San Jose Unified and Campbell Union High school districts. The summit will offer informative workshops for parents to explore college and career opportunities for their future graduates. Parents can peruse an education resource fair, while talking with counselors and the mayor about how to become even more engaged in high school education. Arts Council gives $50,000 in grants

Arts Council Silicon Valley is reaching out to local arts organization with help from Adobe Systems.

The Arts Council has created ArtsEnhance, a new program that will help arts organizations with strategic marketing. The program kicks off with a Sept. 15 conference at the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. The conference will focus on video, web and digital imagery and cover branding, strategy and Adobe software training.

Conference attendees are invited to apply for monetary awards for marketing and communications projects. The Arts Council will give two $10,000 awards and six $5,000 awards. These awards will also include Adobe software. Small and mid-sized arts organizations with main offices in Santa Clara County are eligible.

MetroED classes start up Aug. 30

The Metropolitan Adult Education Program classes begin Aug. 30. MAEP--a unit of MetroED--serves 35,000 adults annually through a variety of day and evening classes, including English as a second language, GED preparation and testing, career technical education and adult basic education.

MAEP's three main centers are the Campbell Adult Center, on the campus of Del Mar High School, 1224 Del Mar Ave; Erikson Adult Center, 4849 Pearl Ave, Room 1 and San Jose Adult Center, 1149 E. Julian St.
