San Jose District 6 candidates report campaign contributions

By Mayra Flores De Marcotte

With Election Day just around the bend, the five candidates running for San Jose city council for District 6--Pierluigi Oliverio, Art Maurice, Jim Spence, Steve Tedesco and Clark Williams--have completed their campaign finance reporting as of the Oct. 10 deadline.

To date Oliverio has been the top fundraiser, reporting $72,019.49 in contributions, including a $20,000 personal loan. Spence reported $10,312 in contributions, including a $200 loan, Tedesco reported $35,671.14, including a $5,000 loan, Williams has raised $55,918 and Maurice reported $3,205, including a $2,000 loan.

The city of San Jose limits individual donations made to campaigns to $250, so reporting has reflected those limitations.

Although Oliverio received the majority of contributions from individuals and refused contributions from special interest groups, notable business contributors included developers Salvatore Caruso Design and Barry Swenson Builder--each donating $250.

Notable contributors to Tedesco's campaign include Robinson Oil Corp. and the California League of Conservation Voters, each donating $250.

Williams received contributions from the Bay Area Union Labor Party and the California League of Conservation Voters, each donating $250.

Spence received contributions of $250 each from local businesses including Joe Escobar Diamonds of Campbell and Bad Boys Bail Bonds of San Jose.

Sobrato Development spread its money around, donating $250 to four of the candidates, excepting Maurice. The Sobrato donations totaled $1,000.

Candidates were required to report their final campaign donations to the city by Oct. 10. The names and address of individuals or organizations contributing money or non-monetary contributions, as well as campaign expenses, were listed for each candidate.
