Consignment center moves showroom to Lincoln Avenue

By Mary Gottschalk

Move It Elsewhere has moved elsewhere.

The innovative consignment business has relocated to 350 Lincoln Ave., between W. San Carlos Street and Auzerais Avenue.

Owner Suzanne Comaroto was forced to move her operation from Stockton Avenue because it was on the site of the proposed Whole Foods Market, which is set to open in 2007. She had operated her business out of two buildings there since April 2005.

The move is bringing her additional space, increasing the showroom to 13,000 square feet, up from 8,500.

"It's a beautiful, big building," says Comaroto with a big smile.

A large number of Move It Elsewhere customers are from the Rose Garden area, and Comaroto says she believes her new location is still easily accessible for them and will bring in more from nearby Willow Glen.

Since 1997, Comaroto has been providing both moving and consignment services to seniors. When clients are downsizing, she offers storage and helps them sell their unwanted possessions on a consignment basis.

Comaroto knows what may be trash to some is often treasure to others.

At her monthly consignment sales, customers search for almost-new furnishings as well as antiques and collectibles.

The opening sale is Nov. 10-12, and longtime customers will appreciate the expansion and organization.

The kitchen area has expanded from one to three rooms, with utensils such as eggbeaters sorted by use and hanging on the walls or in drawers and cupboards.

One room has been turned into a library where books are sorted by topics, from garden and cookbooks to art and travel.

"Now people don't have to look through a thousand books to see what they want," Comaroto says.

The jewelry area has also expanded, and one corner of the shop is all holiday items, including vintage tree ornaments, glassware, dishes and even a dozen pewter napkin rings in the shape of turkeys.

Furniture for every room is displayed, ranging from complete dining room sets with sideboards and china cabinets to a rattan bedroom set with matching dressers. There's a row of grandfather clocks, an area for tools, a collection of perfume bottles and a selection of poker chips in caddies.

A side yard contains outdoor patio furniture as well as a large selection of pots.

Comaroto has created a comfortable living room area with a big-screen television she says she plans to tune into football games on sale days.

Comaroto never knows what will turn up when she's dealing with seniors. Recent consignments include a large collection of seashells, boxes of polished rocks and a large Asian dishware set that includes small table lamps and vases in the same pattern.

Sales are usually one weekend a month as Comaroto needs the rest of her time to deal with other aspects of her business.

The inaugural sale at 350 Lincoln Ave. is Nov. 10-12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To sign up for future sale notices, register at www.moveitelsewhere.com. For additional information, call 408.885.1600.
