Willow Glen Way
bridge to reopen

The Santa Clara Valley Water District and the city of San Jose are hosting the grand re-opening of the renovated Willow Glen Way Bridge on March 3 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The new bridge over the Guadalupe River was completed on Willow Glen Way to make way for the future Upper Guadalupe River Flood Protection Project. The 90-year-old bridge was redesigned to improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

The bridge required a seismic retrofit after it was weakened by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and flooding from 1995 to 1998.

The reconstruction is a partnership between the water district and the community. The outcome is an aesthetically pleasing bridge with stone facing, railing and ornamental lights. The new bridge is 47 feet longer and 13 feet wider than the original design. It accommodates a two-lane road, a sidewalk and bike lanes on both sides.

The celebration will take place in front of the bridge on Willow Glen Way near the Northern Road intersection.

Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 408.265.2607 ext. 2880 or e-mail info@ valleywater.org. or visit www.valley

Clean, safe creeks
face funding bumps

The Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Plan is on track, but new funding challenges are facing the Santa Clara Valley Water District, according to an annual report by Measure B's independent monitoring committee.

Measure B is the 15-year plan that was passed by voters in 2000 to preserve creeks and rivers and provide flood protection, along with the formation of a monitoring committee. While the report stated that the water district is successfully implementing the voter-approved funds, the committee expressed concerns about state and federal funding shortfalls and rising land and construction costs. Other public agencies are also affected by these changes.
