Dorrego best senior in boys soccer
By Kevin Sparrer
Recognition is something that every athlete wants but only few actually receive at the high school level. Lincoln's Ricky Dorrego is one of that select few.
Dorrego, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at San Jose State University, was recognized as an exceptional soccer player this winter. Dorrego, who led the Lincoln boys soccer team to a title in the Mt. Hamilton division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, was named the division's Senior of the Year. He led the Lions with 20 assists as a midfielder this year.
Goalkeeper Martin Reyes of Lincoln also received a special award as the Freshman of the Year. Reyes spent 1,650 minutes between the posts for the Lions and shut out six teams during the year.
Lincoln's Josh Sotelo was named the Coach of the Year.
Colby Roberts from Leigh was awarded the title of Sophomore of the Year in the Mt. Hamilton division.
Senior forward Miguel Botto of Oak Grove was named the Most Valuable Player, and midfielder Gustavo Fernandez of Overfelt was the Junior of the Year.
Reyes, of the Lions, was also named to the all-league first team along with a number of his teammates: senior forwards Francisco Heredia and Juan Ramirez and senior defender Enrique Lopez.
Roberts was also named first team all league as a defender.
Senior defender Adel Aralie and junior midfielder Adonis Lerine from Leland earned all-league first team spots.
Rounding out the first team were: Jose Vitela, Eric Aldama and Chris Duarte from Overfelt and Rashio Adan, Edgar Salazar and Emmanuel Diaz from Oak Grove.
Lincoln also had the lion's share of the second team picks with freshman midfielder Arnold Lopez, senior defender Tyler Shafsky and junior forward Nester Mora making the list.
The Longhorns' Kevin Stanton was named second team all-league as a senior defender.
Juniors Dean Crosbie, a defender, and Cam Jung, a sweeper, were named from Leland. Pioneer senior midfielder William Caceres was also picked to the second team.
Carlos Correa was the top sophomore in the Santa Teresa Division. Correa, from Willow Glen, received the Sophomore of the Year award as a midfielder.
The MVP of the Santa Teresa division was Odilio Lopez from James Lick.
Freddy Cortez of Mt. Pleasant was named Senior of the Year, while Alano Suasin of Independence and Steven Sanchez of Piedmont Hills were named co-Juniors of the Year.
Kyle Lundquist and Jose Cervantes also received awards for their performance on the soccer field for the Rams this season. Both seniors were named first team all-league as defenders.
