Library, fire station
combination project

If my memory serves me right, it was a combination firehouse and library that were built together as a cost saving operation (letter, March 9.)

The old firehouse on Lincoln Avenue became too small and was a traffic hazard when the engines were going out or coming in. The move to the new location, about 1949, and the opening of the new branch library were done at about the same time.

It soon became evident that the combination of library and firehouse was not a very good idea because of the hazards of small children going in and out of the library and walking through the driveway used by the fire engines.

It took a couple of years to get the firehouse moved, and the library took over the whole place.
