Major source of
water is a surprise
Santa Clara Valley Water District celebrates National Ground Water Awareness Week this month.
Nearly half the county's drinking water supply comes from groundwater, according to the district. The underground basins can store more than three times the water then all 10 local reservoirs combined.
The quality of groundwater, however, is threatened by urban runoff, industrial spills, leaking underground storage and septic tanks. The district encourages homeowners to protect groundwater from contamination.
