There's no question--Weimer is the MVP
By Kevin Sparrer
Sometimes when a player receives a Most Valuable Player award, there are people who question the decision. In the case of Michael Weimer, though, there's no question.
Weimer, Westmont's senior center, received the MVP award for boys basketball in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and the decision was a no-brainer.
Weimer scored 617 points throughout the season, which was more than twice the total of the next high-scorer on his team and almost 200 more points than anyone else in the league.
Weimer was the co-MVP in the division with junior center Tyree McCrary of league champion Oak Grove. McCrary led the league with 132 blocks. Weimer was also second on the blocks list with 92.
The Senior of the Year award went to Pioneer forward Gilbert Mendoza.
Guard Kelly Kaigler of Oak Grove and guard Deven Mynhier of Piedmont Hills were co-Juniors of the Year. Jahari Carr of Oak Grove received the Sophomore of the Year award as a forward, and Dominik Arbet was named Freshman of the Year as a guard for Westmont.
Pioneer senior guard Matt Montelongo, Prospect senior guard Zach Stevenson, Leigh senior forward Reece Behrens, Piedmont Hills junior forward Daniel Ginn and Oak Grove junior guard Stacy Long were each named to the all-league first team.
Claiming second-team spots were Natnael Taye of Prospect, T.J. Watson of Pioneer, Darrien Broadnax of Westmont, Aaron Katayama of Leigh, Jordan Kantorik of Santa Teresa, Albert Luts-Puap of Oak Grove and Khoi Nguyen of Evergreen.
In the Santa Teresa Division, it was senior guard Marcus Crawford of Sobrato who stood out from the crowd and received the MVP award.
Willow Glen's Steven Skavdahl received the Senior of the Year award. The Rams guard scored 368 points on the year and led his team in three-pointers with 53. He was also third on his team in rebounds with 96, while leading the team in both steals (34) and assists (98).
Leland had a good showing in the Santa Teresa Division with two specific awards. Guard Drew Marino was the Junior of the Year, and forward Greg Hipwell was tabbed the Sophomore of the Year.
Guard Chisoke Nwuzi of Silver Creek was the Freshman of the Year.
Senior forward Kyle Schroeder of Willow Glen and senior forward Jason Catalano of Branham were named to the all-league first team, along with Josh Lewis of Overfelt, Mubarik Abdulahi of Sobrato, Ndukwe-Kas-Osoka of Andrew Hill and Matt Everly and Billy Dick of Silver Creek.
Senior forward Brian Chunn and Hipwell were Leland players picked to the second team. Willow Glen senior forward Brian Chunn and junior guard Geno Valleta of Branham were also named second team along with Jeff Mounteer of Live Oak, Robert Mercado of Sobrato and Larry Taylor of Overfelt.
