New 35-plus unit
project on Lincoln

A new condominium and towhome project is being proposed at 275 Lincoln Ave., an unincorporated area just outside the Willow Glen borders. The project is in the permitting phase with the San Jose Planning Department.

The project on a .91-acre would demolish four existing structures and replace them with 35 residential condominiums, four townhomes, and two live-work lofts.

The four structures currently on the property include one residential home and three commercial buildings, says project architect Andy Whiting.

"We were waiting for the council member for District 6 to be elected before we began the permitting process," Whiting said.

However, no other information on the project was released.

"We want to unveil the architecture to the communities surrounding the site first," Whiting said.

The architect said community meetings would be scheduled in the upcoming months.

The project will also include a rezoning process, development permits and an improvement plan for the area, said Jitka Cymbal, the project engineer. From there, there will be onsite grading as well as the demolition of the current structures.

Graffiti on the rise
in North Willow Glen

Graffiti is on the rise in Gardner, North Willow Glen and Gregory Plaza, according to residents who attended a March 19 Greater Gardner Coalition meeting.

The police said the problem has increased throughout the city, San Jose Strong Neighborhoods Initiative activity worker Liz Ortiz said, and the police blame the increase on the warmer weather.

There was a house tagged on Delmas Avenue with the word "Dope," as well as random tags throughout the three neighborhoods, Ortiz said.

WGMS family loses
everything in fire

A Willow Glen Middle School family is in need of the community's support after it lost most of its belongings in a Feb. 25 house fire.

The family, a single mother and five children, lost their home near downtown San Jose to a house fire still under investigation, said Karina Ballin, who is the Mckinney-Vento coordinator for the Homeless Education Assistance Act.

Ballin said what the family didn't lose to the fire they lost to smoke damage.

Ballin hopes the community can help with donations of cash or gift cards from Target, Sears or Wal-Mart, as well as clothing or shoes.

Donations are being collected at Willow Glen Middle School, 2105 Cottle Ave. and at 1149 E. Julian St., Bldg. G.

Community Newspapers photographer wins

Jacqueline Ramseyer, who has been photographing stories for Silicon Valley Community Newspapers for close to seven years, was honored by the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association with a first-place award on March 25 for her photograph 'Pound Down' in the Sports Action Category.

The image was captured during one of the bouts at the Strike Force Triple Threat event that took place on Dec. 8 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

Ramseyer's photograph was selected from work submitted by newspaper photographers from the Bay Area and Sacramento areas, including large dailies such as the Mercury News and the Sacramento Bee. The contest drew about 140 news photographers, as well as photojournalism students. Approximately 4,000 images and videotapes for 2006 competition were judged.
