Three HSSV volunteers
earn wag of the tail

Humane Society Silicon Valley honored Willow Glen volunteers Mary Campbell, Elizabeth Laverty and Kevin Williamson as part of National Volunteer Week.

The three volunteers were among 10 recognized at an awards luncheon on April 15. Last year, more than 750 volunteers donated 24,000 hours in a variety of tasks. They were dog, cat and rabbit socializers, kennel assistants, adoption counselors, special event helpers and community outreach educators.

Campbell is a dog socializer who spends nearly every night walking and training dogs at the shelter to ensure they are well-socialized when the right adoptive family comes along, Human Society spokeswoman Laura Fulda says.

Laverty and Williamson are a husband-and-wife team who promote animal adoption on television and at community events. They have adopted two dogs from the shelter, fostered others, and have returned pets to the New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina.

Let there be light, thanks to the sun

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will install 30 solar-energized bus shelters throughout San Jose and Palo Alto.

Solar panels will provide lighting in areas that don't have access to electricity. These panels will provide energy to light the top and side of the shelter.

The added light will help bus operators during the late evenings by making it easier to identify if there is a passenger inside the shelter. The new shelters will also allow passengers light to read while they wait for the bus to arrive.

The project is a joint effort between VTA and Clear Channel.

Scoops raise funds for firefighters

The valley's heating up, and local Baskin-Robbins stores invite residents to beat the heat at the 31-Cent Scoop Night celebration on May 2.

Willow Glen residents can take advantage of the special from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Baskin-Robbins at 1060 Willow St. The special also takes place at the Campbell store, at 1720 W. Campbell Ave.

The event is part of Baskin-Robbins' fundraising efforts for the National Fallen Firefigthers Foundation, to which the ice cream chain will donate $100,000. Local firefighters will visit some Baskin-Robbins locations on May 2 to raise monies for firehouses.
