Paula Street near I-280 could see additional Rockwell Homes project
By Mayra Flores De Marcotte
Rockwell Homes has drawn up plans for another housing development on Paula Street. If approved, the project will continue to change the landscape between Race and Interstate 280.
Rockwell Homes representatives have filed for a site development permit with the San Jose Planning Department to construct 12 single-family attached units on a 0.57-acre and demolish three existing single-family detached homes. The site is a combination of three adjacent parcels at 1024, 1044 and 1050 Paula St.
The units will be for-sale condominiums, said Rockwell spokesman Josh Lobue.
"Everything is very conceptual at this point," Lobue said.
Although the parcels are zoned for medium- to high-density residential, which allows for up to 25 units, Lobue said Rockwell Homes will build only 12.
Each of the units will have a private garage and additional onsite parking, he said.
There are no community meetings scheduled for this project, said San Jose planner Avril Baty.
"Since other developments in the area were without controversy, we have moved forward," Baty said.
The project was first filed in September 2006.
Another Rockwell Homes project nearby at 1088 Paula St. was unanimously approved by the San Jose City Council on Aug. 29. The close to 1-acre site will demolish three single-family homes to make way for 15 townhouses and condominiums. Those homes will be 1,200 square feeet with two bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms.
