Brandt a big winner in Rams' win over Cardinals
By Dick Sparrer
Sam Brandt has been doing it all season long, and the story was no different recently against Mt. Pleasant. The Willow Glen swimmer has been nailing a couple of individual firsts each meet, and helping two relay teams to victories. In the process, he's been leading the Rams to dual- meet wins in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
This week Brandt will be trying to work his water wonders again, but in a different arena--at the BVAL division meet. The Rams will host to the Santa Teresa Division trials on May 4 and the finals on May 5 at 2 p.m.
Swimmers there will be looking to improve their marks, as the division meets are the last ones prior to the Central Coast Section Championship Meet, May 18-19 at Stanford Aquatics Center.
Brandt led the Rams to a recent 117-61 win over the Cardinals with his typical four-win day. He was first in both the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.73 and the 500 free in 5:41.14. He also teamed with Reese Rotsaert, Geoffrey Dubridge and Chris McCarthy for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:41.68 and with Dubridge, Mike London and Nathan Woo for a victory in the 400 free relay in 3:50.16.
McCarthy, Woo, London and Lucas LeBaron were also individual winners in the meet for the Rams. McCarthy took the 50 free in 24.57, LeBaron the diving event with 108.3 points, Woo the 100 butterfly in 1:07.11 and London the 100 backstroke in 1:06.88.
London, Woo and McCarthy also combined with Dustin Shean to take the 200 medley relay in 1:55.44 as the Rams improved to 5-1 in the division dual-meet season.
It had been a similar story when the Rams swamped Silver Creek 111-69 earlier in the year. Brandt took first in the 100 free in 55.38 and was first again in the 500 in 5:49.53. He teamed with Woo, McCarthy and Rotsaert for a victory in the 200 free relay in 1:39.05, and he joined forces with London, Dubridge and Charlie Kane to take the 400 free relay in 3:52.73.
Woo was also a double winner for the Rams, winning the 200 free in 2:05.30 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.37. Rotsaert was first in the 100 fly in 1:07.08, London took the 100 back in 1:07.04 and LeBaron was the diving winner for the Rams.
A week later Willow Glen cruised past Del Mar 123-47. London was a double winner in the 100 back and 200 individual medley, and Brandt (500 free), Kane (200 free), McCarthy (50 free), Woo (100 free) and Marcus Enzwiler (diving) were other Willow Glen winners. The Rams also won all three relay events.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rams have rebounded for a couple of team wins after getting off to a 0-4 start in the dual-meet season.
Willow Glen whipped winless Mt. Pleasant 115-53 behind the efforts of Kate Waggoner and Jacky Anderson, who each won a pair of events for the Rams.
Waggoner breezed to a win in the 200 IM in 2:32.82 and took the 50 free in 28.63, and Anderson took the 500 in 5:54.80 and the 100 back in 1:10.88. The two teamed with Jamie Furtado and Elizabeth Brock to win the 200 medley relay in 2:18.89, and Furtado also took the 200 free in 2:25.52.
Furtado and Waggoner got together with Lizzy Illges and Amber Johnson for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:58.30, and Furtado, Anderson and Illges joined Kim Helmbold for a victory in the 400 free relay in 4:33.50. Illges added a win in the 100 free in 1:04.52, and Lindsay Lester was the diving winner with 246.1 points.
The girls had posted their first dual-meet win a week earlier with a 98-81 victory over Del Mar. Anderson won the 100 back in 1:09.4, Illges the 100 free in 1:04.71, Waggoner the 100 breast in 1:19.6 and Lester the diving event with 243.9 points.
Furtado, Helmbold, Illges and Anderson were winners in the 400 free relay in 4:31.0.
The Lady Rams didn't have quite as much luck against Silver Creek, falling 93-77.
Waggoner and Anderson each won a pair of events for Willow Glen, and Furtado won one. They were also all members of the winning 400 free relay team.
Waggoner won the 50 free in 28.35 and was first in the 100 breast in 1:20.24, and Anderson took first in the 500 free in 5:54.26 and the 100 back in 1:09.13. Furtado was tops in the 200 free in 2:25.66.
Furtado, Anderson, Waggoner and Illges teamed up to win the 400 free relay in 4:16.38.
