Willow Glen boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Santa Teresa swimming finals
By Dick Sparrer
Water's water, or so it would seem. But the Willow Glen boys and girls swimming team seem to find the water in their high school swimming pool especially to their liking--at least, they did when they competed in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division swimming and diving finals last weekend.
The Willow Glen boys finished second and the girls nailed third in the eight-team division meet. Evergreen Valley won the boys title with 531 points with the Rams second at 448, well ahead of third-place Prospect (379). The Willow Glen girls ran up 268 points to edge Del Mar (260) for third, but finished behind Evergreen (556) and Prospect (372).
Individual champions Sam Brandt, Mike London and Luke LeBaron sparked the Rams to the second-place finish in the boys division.
Brandt, a sophomore, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.52, and he added a second in the 500 free in 5:27.90. London, a freshman, took the 200 individual medley in 2:14.32 and was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.47.
LeBaron, also a freshman, ran up 213.00 points to win the diving competition at the league meet.
Nate Woo finished second in both the 100 free in 53.84 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.65.
Sophomore Chris McCarthy was second in the 50 free in 24.05 with senior Reese Rotsaert third in 24.35, and junior Charlie Kane was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.72.
The Rams also finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.09 and second in the 400 free relay in 3:38.67. The boys will be sending three relay teams--200 and 400 free, and 200 medley--to the Central Coast Section meet set for May 18-19 at Stanford University's Avery Aquatics Center.
The Willow Glen girls were paced by junior Jackie Anderson, who finished the meet with a first and a second. Anderson won the 500 free in 5:43.57 and was second in the 100 back in 1:09.63.
Kate Waggoner supported with a third in the 100 breast in 1:17.66, and the Rams were also third in the 200 free relay in 1:55.16.
The Rams are led by first-year coaches Zach and Eric Greer.
Sisco shoots 5-over
Robby Sisco fired a 5-over-par 41 at the San Jose Municipal Golf Course to lead the Willow Glen golf team to a 263-275 victory over Del Mar recently. The victory, coupled with a 233-246 triumph later in the week over the Dons at Deep Cliff, left the Rams 10-2 for the year in Santa Teresa Division play.
Rams in playoffs
The Willow Glen boys volleyball team took a 20-13 season record into the CCS playoffs this week when the Rams opened on May 10 at Monterey (23-8). The Toreadors ranked as the No. 7 seed in the tourney and the Rams earned the No. 10 spot.
Willow Glen and Monterey are no strangers to one another. The two teams have met twice already this year, Monterey topping the Rams 2-1 at the Willow Glen Hammering and Roofing Seminar and Willow Glen besting the Toreadors 3-1 in an early season non-league match.
The winner will advance to the tourney quarterfinals on May 12 at Independence to face the winners of the No. 2 Mt. Madonna (25-4)-No. 15 Leland (13-16) match.
The Rams wrapped up an 8-2 finish in the rugged BVAL race this spring. Leigh won the division title with a 9-1 record with the Rams second and Leland and Westmont sharing third with matching 6-4 records.
Seniors Tobin Chase, Billy Hahn and Robby Harris sparked the Rams to the second-place finish in the league race and to a CCS berth. Other seniors on the squad include Evan Bishop, Chad Camp and Robby Paine.
Conroy leads Rams
Senior Nadia Conroy won 15-3, 15-3 in the girls No. 1 singles spot to lead the Willow Glen badminton team to an 11-4 win over Del Mar. The victory helped the Rams finish with a 12-3 record in the West Valley Division.
Earlier in the week, Conroy won 15-9, 15-11 in girls No. 1 singles and senior Nguyen Le won 15-2, 15-9 in boys No. 1 singles in a 12-3 victory over James Lick.
