Why is the library
thinning circulation?

With the Willow Glen library closed for rebuilding, I have been checking out books regularly from the Rose Garden library, whose facility is nice and airy.

Unfortunately, when I took some books back recently and checked out more, it appeared to me that the section I had been checking them out from--the biography section--had gotten smaller.

When I asked one of the workers about this, I was told that there had been some physical rearranging, with at least some of the books I have normally seen in this area in a different location.

Fine, but then she went on to mention that the library was also thinning out its collections, using frequency of checkout as one of the criteria in selecting what to thin out.

Wrong answer, and a very disturbing one.

As a library patron and San Jose resident, I would hope that our public libraries would be adding, not taking away books.

Hopefully, District 6 Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio will be among those who see my letter and take a look at what's going on here and do what he can to stop the thinning out of collections without a very good reason.
