Palm haven celebrates its history with tour, party, music

By Emilie Crofton

After a one-year hiatus, Palm Haven residents are celebrating the history of Willow Glen with a bang.

The neighborhood will once again host its historic Prohibition Party Sept. 8.

The adults-only event will include tours of historical homes, costumes, food, music and dancing.

The party honors Willow Glen, which became a city in 1927 during the prohibition period.

"Eighty years ago Willow Glen was founded and Palm Haven residents helped to make that happen," says Michael Borbely, president of the Palm Haven restoration committee.

Every 20 minutes there will be a historical homes tour of six Palm Haven residences. Docents will lead the tours between 5 and 7 p.m.

After the tours the party starts, with music featuring the band Stompy Jones. The event will last until 11 p.m. Stompy Jones will play jazz and swing music from the '20s, '30s and '40s.

"They really get involved with the crowd," Borbely says. "They're a great band."

A live auction will offer gifts from local businesses including Bella James, Casa Casa, The Fitness Group, La Villa and Maxwellness & Fitness Services.

Proceeds go toward improvements to the Palm Haven Historic Conservation Area.

Last year Palm Haven residents had to cancel the historic homes tour as several homeowners backed out at the last minute.

Everyone is encouraged to dress as if they were living in the Roaring '20s.

Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at Casa Casa, Eclectic Touch, Bella James, Urban Sports, Love & Peace or through the Palm Haven's website, www. palmhaven.info by using PayPal.
