By Mary Gottschalk

Nina Bruno Boyd, a Willow Glen resident for close to five decades, was recently honored for her volunteer work with a formal commendation by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.

Boyd, a San Jose native who now heads Boyd Properties, just completed 16 years of service on the County of Santa Clara/ Province of Florence, Italy, Sister-County Commission.

During her tenure she served as chairwoman, vice chair, secretary and historian and twice co-chaired the commission's Medici Masked Ball.

The commendation, written by Supervisor Pete McHugh, recognized Boyd's work with the Italian-American Heritage Foundation, where she has been a board member and coordinator for many of the foundation's fashion shows.

The Italian-American Heritage Foundation acknowledged her commitment to its organization with an award in 2000.

Boyd has also been an active supporter of Valle Monte League, O'Connor Hospital Foundation and is on the board of governors of American Musical Theatre of San Jose.

Additionally, Boyd has been recognized with awards from the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, Santa Clara University's Catala Club and Alexian Brothers Hospital League.

Boyd is the only child of Josephine and Salvatore Bruno, who immigrated from their native Sicily and founded Bruno Brothers Grocery and Bruno Properties.

She is a graduate of Notre Dame High School, which recognized her with their Woman of Honor Award in 1996.

Boyd earned a degree in accounting and business administration at San Jose State University.

She and her late husband, J. Charles Boyd, raised four children. She is now the grandmother of six and great-grandmother of two.
