Ida Price's Connie Gray is named as 2007 teacher of the year
By Emilie Crofton
Thirty teachers were able to put down their red pens and take a break from teaching to celebrate with others in their profession at Campbell's Heritage Theatre.
Connie Gray, a teacher in the Cambrian School District, is one of the Santa Clara County 2007 Teachers of the Year who was honored at a Sept. 24 teacher recognition event.
Ida Price Middle School instructor Gray is celebrating her 25th year as a teacher and her 20th year teaching in the Cambrian School district.
She teaches sixth-grade math, social studies and Quest--an anti-drug program for teens that focuses on skills, self-esteem and peer pressure.
"There are plenty of hard-working teachers in this district, so it makes me especially proud that they would recognize me," Gray says. "It feels really good."
Deb Negrete, principal at Ida Price Middle School, says Gray has been a lifelong learner, continually updating her knowledge about the use of technology within the classroom.
Negrete says Gray was instrumental in ensuring that the homework center was up and running for students after school.
"She truly creates a nurturing environment for her students," Negrete says. "She's very conscientious about making sure students' needs are met."
Gray says she always maintains high standards and expectations in her class. She respects her students and expects them to respect her in return.
"If students know that you care about them and you want them to be successful, then I think the battle is half over," she says.
Both teachers were thrilled to be recognized for doing something they have such passion for.
"I love what I do," Gray says. "I look forward to coming to work every day."
