Defense the key for Rams in polo victory

Scoring goals is important, but sometimes defense is even more important.
The Willow Glen's boys varsity water polo team discovered that when the Rams downed Pioneer 5-4 in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division match-up on Oct. 2, thanks to the Rams' defense in the fourth quarter.
The Rams were leading 2-0 after the first quarter; the game was tied by the end of the third. Chris Green then fired the ball into the Mustang net to give Willow Glen a 5-4 lead, and the Rams held their lead with Kyle Tom keeping the Mustangs out of the net.
Sam Brandt scored two of the Rams' goals, while Geoffrey Dubridge, Charlie Kane and Green each scored one.
The junior varsity boys fared just as well against the Mustangs, taking the win 9-4. Luke Walton led the attack with four goals, and Marcus Enzweiler added three goals.
Willow Glen was to play host to Lincoln on Oct. 10 and will visit Live Oak on Oct. 16 with the varsity boys beginning at 4 p.m.
The girls water polo team fell to Evergreen Valley 7-5 on Oct. 2, with Lizzy Illges and Kim Bootorich each scoring two goals and Evelyn Cervantes scoring one.
The Rams were to face Sobrato on Oct. 10 and will face Mt. Pleasant at Live Oak on Oct. 16 with the varsity game beginning at 5 p.m.
Scoreless week
Willow Glen's field hockey team had a tough week, fighting Westmont to a scoreless tie and falling to Live Oak 2-0. Willow Glen slipped to 3-2-1 after the tie and loss.
The Rams were to host Lynbrook in a Santa Teresa Division game on Oct. 10 and will be home to face rival Presentation on Oct. 12, 3:30 p.m. Willow Glen will hit the road to take on Monta Vista in a 2:45 p.m. game on Oct. 15. The Panthers are 2-2-1 in division play after playing Cupertino to a 0-0 tie, and the Matadors ran their league record to 3-2 with a 4-0 victory over winless Prospect last week.
Rams romp
The Willow Glen boys cross country team won its a Mt. Hamilton Division double-dual meet at Montgomery Hill on Sept. 27. The Rams defeated Sobrato 25-32 and Silver Creek 24-33.
Danny Owens led the run for the Rams, finishing third in the race at 16:31, a second ahead of Mohamed Abdalla (fourth, 16:32), who was a second in front of Lema Kohe (fifth, 16:33). Nati Wolde (seventh, 17:15) and Julien Valentino (eighth, 17:15) finished out the scoring for the Rams. Also running for Willow Glen was John Ladd (12th, 18:00).
Willow Glen's girls varsity cross country team was not quite as lucky, falling to Sobrato 22-33, but the lady Rams were able to down Silver Creek 15-45.
Hayley Tharp (third, 20:28) led the run with Jackie Anderson (fifth, 20:50) following close behind. Kristina Rivera (sixth, 20:55) came next with Chelsea Moran (ninth, 21:17) preceding Kari Server (10th, 21:35), who finished the scoring for the Rams. Ken DeLa Cruz (11th, 21:37) also ran for the Rams.
Willow Glen will face Piedmont Hills and Leland on Oct. 11 with the meet beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Mee a leader
The Willow Glen girls volleyball team struggled against Piedmont Hills, falling 26-24, 25-22, 24-26, 25-13 on Oct. 4 in a Santa Teresa Division match. Leah Mee led in kills for Willow Glen with 12. The loss brought Willow Glen to 3-3 in league and to 7-12 overall.
The Rams' also defeated Independence 25-22, 24-26, 25-12, 11-25, 15-9. Mee and Cara Schroeder led Willow Glen in kills with nine each.
The Rams went to Andrew Hill on Oct. 9 and will head to Santa Teresa to face the Saints on Oct. 11 with a 6 p.m. start.
