Everyone scores in Willow Glen polo win

By Kevin Sparrer

The most gratifying wins in sports are when the entire team is a part of the victory, and the Willow Glen boys water polo team experienced that thrill when it crushed Lincoln 15-8 on Oct. 10 at the home of the Rams. In this case literally the entire team took part in the win with every player on the roster scoring at least one goal, with the exception of the goalie.

Chris Green led the offensive attack with three goals, while Charlie Kane and Chris McCarthy scored two apiece. Geoffrey Dubridge, Tyler Paradiso, Josh Dombro and Dustin Shean each scored one.

The Rams took a quick lead, outscoring the Lions 5-1 in the first quarter, then added two more in the second period to extend their lead to 7-4. Willow Glen broke it open, outscoring the Lions 5-2 in the third thanks to three consecutive goals from Green and finally three more goals in the fourth against the Lions' two.

The win advanced Willow Glen's record to 2-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Willow Glen went to Live Oak on Oct. 16 and will go to Live Oak again on Oct. 23 to face Evergreen Valley at 6 p.m.

The girls water polo team fell to Sobrato 8-7 on Oct. 10, with Lizzy Illges leading the scoring for the Rams with three goals. A. Sigman had two goals, while Kim Bootorich and Evelyn Cervantes each scored one.

The Rams took on Mt. Pleasant on Oct. 16 and will face Piedmont Hills at Independence on Oct. 18 with a 5 p.m. start.

Rams roll 56-13

Willow Glen's football team also had some success last week, crushing Yerba Buena 56-13 on Oct. 12. The Rams scored at least once in each quarter, topping out at 21 points in the second quarter.

Ricky Huynh scored the first two touchdowns in the game on runs of 14 and seven yards. Mike Gibilisco carried in the third on a 21-yard run, and Huynh scored again on a one-yard run.

Bobby Lopez picked off a pass and returned it 15 yards for another Ram score, and Gibilisco scored the next two touchdowns on runs of 63 and 80 yards, totaling almost 200 yards on only his three touchdown runs. The last Ram score came when Dane Gurley broke a 55-yard run.

Nathan Kadlecek booted all eight extra points after the Willow Glen touchdowns.

Gibilisco ran for 230 yards on only nine carries, while Huynh ran for 109 yards on nine tries.

It was the first league victory for the Rams in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

The Rams will head to Overfelt for their next game on Oct. 19, 7 p.m.

Rams run to wins

Willow Glen's boys cross country team established itself again as a dominant force in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL, defeating Piedmont Hills 19-40 and Leland 17-41 in a double dual meet at Montgomery Hill on Oct. 11.

Mohamed Abdalla led the pack, not only for the Rams but for the entire race, finishing first in 14:01. The next Ram to finish was John Ladd (eighth, 15:57) with Lema Kohe (ninth, 15:57) right next to him.

The Rams remain undefeated at 6-0 and will take on Evergreen Valley, Andrew Hill and Sobrato on Oct. 18 at Montgomery Hill with a 3:30 p.m. start time.

The Willow Glen girls cross country team didn't fare quite as well, defeating Piedmont Hills 24-31 but falling to Leland 18-38.

The first of the Rams to finish was Jackie Anderson, who came in seventh overall in 19:43. Not far behind her were Kari Server (14th, 20:16) and Chelsea Moran (22nd, 20:50).

Splitting the meet brought Willow Glen to 4-2 in league. The girls will join the boys on Oct. 18 at Montgomery Hill against Evergreen Valley, Andrew Hill and Sobrato.

Volleyball win

Cara Schroeder and Leah Mee led the Willow Glen girls volleyball team over Andrew Hill 25-13, 22-25, 28-26, 25-18 on Oct. 9. Mee and Schroeder both had 10 kills in the win. The victory brings Willow Glen to 4-3 in the Santa Teresa Division and to 8-12 overall.
