Willow Glen backs are faster than Comets

Ricky Huynh, Bobby Lopez and Mike Gibilisco are faster than Comets, and they score more touchdowns.

The three combined for 317 yards and five TDs to lead the Willow Glen football team to a 40-6 win over James Lick on Oct. 27, pushing the Rams' record to 3-2 in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Huynh led the attack, taking the ball 16 times for 123 yards and two scores. Gibilisco was next with 12 touches for 100 yards and one touchdown, and Lopez had seven carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Charlie Findeisen led the Rams with 12 tackles, including four sacks.

Huynh scored the first touchdown for Willow Glen on a 40-yard run, and Nathan Kadlecek kicked the extra point to give the Rams a 7-0 lead. Gibilisco was next, running the ball in from 13 yards out, but the extra point failed. Huynh then scored his second time on a two-yard run with the kick failing again. Lopez scored the fourth touchdown for the Rams on his own 40-yard run with Kadlecek kicking the extra point. Dan Winter then scored on a four-yard pass from Daniel Castillo with Kadlecek kicking the extra point again, bringing the lead to 33-0.

Castillo finished the day hitting on 8 of 13 passes for 123 yards. Huynh caught three for 53 yards, Findeisen three for 36, Kurtis Smith one for 30 and Winter one for four.

Shareef Allman supported on the ground for the Rams with four carries for 31 yards.

James Lick then scored its first touchdown before Lopez took the ball in from 22 yards out for his second score of the game with Kadlecek kicking the extra point again.

Schuyler Ross got in on seven tackles, Winter and Robert Morrey six each, Gibilisco five, Dalton Bond four and Dane Gurley three. Bond, Winter and Jose Gutierrez were also in on sacks.

The Rams will go to Live Oak on Nov. 2 where they will face Sobrato at 7 p.m.

Rams host tourney

The Willow Glen boys water polo team took part in the Monta Vista Invitational over the week. The Rams defeated Aptos 9-8, but they fell to Carmel 10-8. Charlie Kane led Willow Glen with three goals, Sam Brandt added two, while Josh Dombro, Josh Dublidae and Luke LeBaron scored one each.

Earlier Willow Glen defeated Harbor 7-6 with Brandt scoring four goals. Kane, Dombro and Dublidae each had one as well.

Willow Glen is hosting the first two days of the BVAL polo tournament for boys and girls. There will be four games each day with the first games at 2 p.m. The qualifying round for Santa Teresa Division teams to get into the Mt. Hamilton Division league tournament was on Oct. 30. On Nov. 1 the first round games of the BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division tournament were scheduled. The Rams played at 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 1.

The semifinals will be at Live Oak on Nov. 2.

Macias-Lopez 4th

Willow Glen's girls tennis team had some success in the West Valley Division league championships held on Oct. 25 and 26. Sandra Macias and Adalia Lopez took fourth place in the doubles competition after losing to a team from Sobrato in the third-place match.

Prior to the tournament, Willow Glen finished the season on a positive note by defeating Pioneer 6-1 on Oct. 18.

Lopez led the attack, winning her match at No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Laura Pierson, Edith Herrera and Laura Redmond also won their singles matches against the Mustangs.

Willow Glen also won two of the three doubles matches with Carla Avila and Belle Tran and Erica Gomez and Kathryn Sartor defeating their opponents.

Willow Glen finished out league play 9-3 in the West Valley Division.

Volleyball win

Willow Glen's girls volleyball team defeated Independence 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 with Stephanie Wilson leading with six kills. The win on Oct. 26 brings the Rams to 7-5 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and 11-14 overall.

The Rams went to Piedmont Hills on Oct. 30 and will host Andrew Hill for the last match of the season on Nov. 1, 6 p.m.
