Bittle, Bruins cruise to victory over Saints in Miguel tourney

Ashley Bittle found her groove when the Branham hurler held Santa Teresa to only two hits in the Bruins' 6-3 win in pool play of the Charlie Miguel Softball Tournament on March 22.

The win boosts Bittle's record to 2-3 so far this season.

Melissa Maves also helped the Bruins with a triple and two RBIs in the win.

Earlier in the day, Branham fell 2-1 to Monta Vista, with Maves knocking in the only run.

Branham also fell to Wilcox 5-3 in the Miguel Tournament on March 21 in six innings, with Maves smacking a double and driving in two runs. a pair of home runs, and also driving in four runs.

Branham will host Independence

On March 20, Branham defeated Oak Grove 5-1 with Bittle pitching. Nicole Bertolacci knocked two hits and had three RBIs in the win.

And on March 18, Branham dealt with Silver Creek 21-2 with Bobby Jo Niemi pitching for the Bruins and Michelle Haughey smacking four hits, including on April 2 at 3:30 p.m. for the next Santa Teresa Division league game.

Leland wins at Miguel

Leland's softball team is also taking part in the Charlie Miguel Tournament and won its most recent game over Del Mar 7-0 on March 22.

Rehanna Rinauro singled and drove in a run, Lisa Fujihara also singled, Jessie Frediani had a hit and an RBI, Ashley Bowler drove in two runs, and Megan Unger and Lindsey Truan singled in the win. Stephanie Spindler also scored twice, and Courtney Krail scored once.

Truan was pitching for the Chargers, striking out 10 and throwing a one-hit shutout.

Earlier in the day, Leland downed Cupertino 16-2 in only five innings. Spindler led with three hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs, while Bowler had a pair of hits and a home run and drove in four. Frediani also knocked two hits and had an RBI, while Alyssa Chaulklin singled and drove in one, Katrina Hoagland singled, Rinauro had a hit, Vanessa Chaulklin scored twice, Krail scored and Truan scored twice and drove in one.

Truan got the win again, allowing only one hit and one run while striking out five.

Leland fell 7-5 against Milpitas on March 21 with Truan leading the offense with a single and a triple and two runs scored.

The Chargers also defeated Live Oak 4-3 in eight innings on March 20, with Truan adding another win and belting three hits, including a double, and driving in a run.

On March 18, Leland downed Westmont 6-1, with Truan again doing the pitching. Fujihara knocked two hits.

Leland is currently 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Theis leads Leigh

Leigh defeated Carmel 5-4 on March 22 in the Miguel tourney thanks to Carissa Theis, who threw a complete game and struck out seven.

Brittney Pangborn also had a big hand in the win, getting three hits in three at-bats and driving in one. Becca Hogan added a pair of hits and drove in three, Kayla Pisano had a single and scored twice, Brooke MacLean singled, drove in a run and scored, and Kirstie Zimmerman knocked a double and scored.

Earlier in the day, Leigh defeated Soquel 4-1 with Theis again the winning pitcher, this time striking out 19.

Hogan knocked a pair of hits, including a double, and she drove in a run, while Shelby Ford doubled and drove in two, Elyse Eitel singled and scored and MacLean drove in a run.

On March 21, Leigh defeated Mountain View 9-1. Theis was again the winning pitcher. Eitel blasted a homer, and Ford knocked a triple and a double and drove in three runs.

Leigh defeated Piedmont Hills 3-1 on March 20, with Theis adding another win to her list and Zimmerman knocking in two runs.

Also on March 18, Leigh downed Evergreen Valley 3-2, with Theis again getting the win. Ford knocked two hits.

The streak of wins takes Leigh to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Leigh was to host Westmont on March 26 at 3:30 p.m.

Lions win big

Lincoln's softball team had two big wins last week, defeating Yerba Buena 12-2 on March 20 and Gunderson 12-10 on March 18.

Bria Bohdanowicz was the winning pitcher in both games, bringing her to 5-2 this year. Against Yerba Buena, Bohdanowicz was the big hitter with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Kayla Caballero had a double, a triple and a single against Gunderson, as well as driving in three runs.

The wins bring Lincoln to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in the West Valley Division. On April 1, Lincoln will host Overfelt at 3:30 p.m.

Rams top Comets

Willow Glen's softball team enjoyed a 6-5 win over James Lick on March 18, with Rikki Martinez scoring the game-winning run with one out in the last inning, as well as belting a single and a double. Kelsee Graves was the winning pitcher for the Rams.

The win brings Willow Glen to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the West Valley Division. The Rams will head to Gunderson on April 1 for a 3:30 p.m. game.

Panthers win title

The Presentation softball team is riding its momentum after winning the title in the Annie Lynch Memorial Circle of Champions Tournament on March 15 at the Salinas Sports Complex. The Panthers defeated Soquel 5-1, Alvarez 10-2, Burlingame 4-3, Gilroy 3-0, Stevenson 4-1 and Leigh 2-0. Anna Cannino, Molly Medeiros, Joanella Mendoza and Alicia Pizarro were all named to the all-tournament team.

Mustangs roll

Pioneer defeated Seaside 5-2 in the Charlie Miguel Tournament on March 22. Ashley McMahon got the win for the Mustangs, while Jaclyn Castillo knocked a pair of hits and scored.

Earlier in the day, Pioneer also defeated Los Gatos 7-0.

On March 20 the Mustangs downed Westmont 6-2, with Walker again pitching and knocking a single and a double.

Pioneer also defeated Santa Teresa 4-1 on March 18.
