All Chargers contribute in big win over Warriors

By Kevin Sparrer

The best wins in baseball are when every player on the team contributes something, and in Leland's 9-6 win over Westmont on April 4 every player in the lineup played a part in the Chargers' six-run fourth-inning rally.

After scoring two in the top of the second, Leland went behind when Westmont got one back in the bottom of the second and scored three more in the bottom of the third. Behind 4-2, Leland went on a rampage, scoring six runs in the top of the fourth.

The rally began when Spencer Lanoue drew a walk and raced all the way to second when ball four got away from the Westmont catcher. Cam O'Halloran drew a walk to put two runners on. The runners advanced a moment later on a passed ball, and with two runners in scoring position, Wes Deimling hit a line drive up the middle that scored them both.

With a runner on first, Trevor Marino beat out an infield hit on a ground ball deep in the hole at short. Kevin Krail came up and crushed a ground ball single up the middle that scored Deimling. Marino went to third on a throw to the plate and Krail ended up on second. Will Boring followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Marino and advance Krail to third and then Nate Jones followed suit with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Krail. With the bases empty and two outs, Trevor Dyer singled up the middle and scored when Drew Marino smacked a double to left field.

Leland struck again in the top of the seventh when Lanoue sent one over the right field fence for a solo home run.

On April 2 Leland didn't have as much luck, falling to Westmont 7-4. Jones led the team with a single, a run scored and an RBI. Boring, D. Marino and Lanoue also singled in the loss and Dyer, T. Marino and Krail each scored.

Splitting last week brought Leland to 4-5-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and to 10-7-1 overall. The Chargers were to host Leigh on April 9 and will head to the home of the Longhorns on April 11 at 3:30 p.m.

Leigh's baseball team had a good week, defeating Live Oak 3-2 on April 4--all three runs scoring in the top of the seventh--and also besting Live Oak 5-1 on April 2.

On Friday it was Nick Jones who knocked a pair of hits, while Tyler Christian roped a double and scored. Max Michaelis belted a double and drove in two while Travis Velo smacked a single and scored. Ryan Pitman also had an RBI in the win.

On Wednesday Matt Burns stood on the hill for the Longhorns and shut down Live Oak, allowing only two hits and one run in the six innings he threw. Burns got the win and Steve Amaral picked up a save.

At the plate it was Michaelis who roped a double and drove in two in the win.

The two Mt. Hamilton Division wins bring Leigh to 9-1 in league and 14-4 overall.

Pioneer split with Piedmont Hills last week. The Mustangs won 5-2 on April 4 and fell at home 4-3 in 13 innings on April 2.

In the win Don Medlinger threw a complete game, walking only two while striking out 10. Greg Schwartz had the big bat for Pioneer, knocking a double and a single and driving in one.

On Wednesday, Pioneer fell in a tough fight when Piedmont scored its final run in the top of the 13th. Justin Souza smacked a double and scored, Matt Yanez ripped a double, Michael Boudinot roped a single and drove in one, Medlinger singled, Jon Meyer had an RBI and both Schwartz and Rob Artery scored.

The two games bring Pioneer to 3-7 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and to 6-8 overall. The Mustangs were to visit Santa Teresa on April 9 and will face Santa Teresa on April 11 at 7 p.m. at a site yet to be determined.

Branham had a tough week, falling to Santa Teresa 10-3 on both April 2 and April 4.

On Friday Chris Urakami and Gino Valletta each finished with a double and a single and Valletta had an RBI, while Urakami scored twice. Kyle Cool knocked a hit, David Bailey smacked a singled and scored, Erik Alcantar and Sam Whitemore roped hits and Kevin Wallace smashed a single and drove in one.

On Wednesday Cool helped the Bruins by belting a single and scoring, and Wallace crushed a double and drove in one.

Branham was able to defeat Gilroy on April 1 in a non-league game with Nick Rossetta getting his second win on the mound this year. Wallace roped two hits, including a double, and scored a run in the win.

Branham is now 2-10 in the Mt. Hamilton Division and 5-14 overall. The Bruins will host Fremont on April 11 at 3:30 p.m. in a non-league game.

Lincoln also had a tough week, falling twice to Prospect. On April 4 the Lions lost 3-2 and then 1-0 on April 2.

Ryan Cannon, Kris Heredia, Alex Nelson and Max Lawrence had the only four hits for the Lions on Friday. Cannon and Nick Demartini had the two RBIs in the loss.

On Wednesday Cannon, Nathan Leon and Lawrence had the only hits, with Lawrence ripping a double.

The two losses drop Lincoln to 6-4 in the Santa Teresa Division and 7-4 overall. The Lions will travel to Sobrato on April 11 for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.

Willow Glen added two wins over Oak Grove last week, defeating the Eagles 7-6 on April 4 and 7-1 on April 2.

On Friday Jake Goetz led the offensive attack, ripping a single and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Anthony Gotelli added a pair of hits and two RBIs in the win, but it was Dane Gurley who had the game winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.

On Wednesday it was Tyler Heinkel who knocked the ball around with a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Kyle Ray smacked two hits and scored twice.

The wins bring Willow Glen to 6-4 in the Santa Teresa Division and 10-8 overall. The Rams will head to Mt. Pleasant on April 11 at 3:30 p.m. for a league game.
