Rose Garden lofts project will move forward

By Mary Gottschalk

The Park Avenue Lofts development will move forward without any retail space. San Jose planning officials agreed to drop the commercial component in favor of more housing at the development during the San Jose planning director's hearing on April 16.

The property at 777 Park Ave. changed hands after the initial planned development permit was approved in 2006.

New owners AGI Capital and Avant Housing will now increase the number of housing units from 122 to 125.

Mike Walsh of AGI said earlier that the original plans for 2,500 square feet of commercial space weren't viable and "we thought it would be more effectively used for residential."

The façade will also be changed, from the originally proposed Mission style to what Walsh called "a more contemporary urban look that is more in line with the neighborhood and its surroundings."

The revised proposal calls for 125 units on the 2.17-acre site on the north side of Park Avenue at Laurel Grove Street.

Plans call for 42 one-bedroom, 61 two-bedroom and 22 three-bedroom single-family attached live/work lofts. Some 198 parking spaces are planned.

The Park Avenue Lofts development will be the final piece of development in the area known as Cahill Park.
